Exploring the Brain

My Students

Our town is a neighboring community of the state capital. Our school contains 45% low income students, and has a mobility rate of 11%. Like many other districts, ours is struggling financially. The students who would benefit from this project are hands-on learners, who seek active learning.

Throughout this course, we have been exploring the skills and practices that are required to explore questions in science.

My students have expressed interest in learning about the science behind the brain, so we will be learning about the general parts of the brain, and how they work together, before beginning student-led experiments, involving the mind. My students are curious and eager to explore topics in science, and this course aims to build on that curiosity to increase their enthusiasm. Although we rely on various types of learning, the students have expressed a preference toward learning through hands-on experiences.

My Project

We can learn about the brain in stations and activities, by reading, or on the internet, but how many middle school children have the opportunity to hold a brain in their hands? In previous quarters, I have spent my own money to purchase one sheep brain, so that each class could put on pairs of gloves, and pass it around. The ability to hold an organ that held the thoughts, feelings, and memory of another organism is awe-inspiring, and the students always leave with a look of wonder and curiosity. In the upcoming quarter, I would like to offer students the opportunity to handle and dissect a brain in small groups, allowing them to see, feel, identify, and even color dye the parts of the brain. I am hoping that the experience will be memorable, and have a lasting impact on their interest in science.

This project will serve our 6th and 7th-grade students during the 3rd quarter.

If it is successful, we may arrange another donorschoose project for the fourth quarter, and attempt to seek grant funding to continue this activity in the following year. This opportunity seeks to teach and inspire, to expose students to something new, and to help them to see that our community is a place where learning can be exciting.
