My Students
The goal is to read 50 books of your interest... but what is a student to do when the classroom library has no interesting books?
I have 24 actively learning 5th graders in a Charter school setting.
We're a brand new school, and the students are going through a change with teachers currently. Their previous teacher had a library made of a majority of 2nd grade level books. These 5th graders need more challenge than they have with the books they read for leisure.
My Project
We have many breaks throughout the day for independent reading, but our current library is lacking. Being able to bring in books like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Magic Treehouse will give them books of interest that they can read and not be bored with. Some of the books are more challenging, so students can try to expand their reading horizon.
Reading has more impact than just a fun story - it allows for an expanded thought process, higher grammar, and gives imagination to children who spend a lot of time watching TV and on computers.
Expanding our classroom library will expose students to both current best seller books they love as well as classic stories they may never read otherwise.
