Excercise Balls Help Us Bounce into Learning

My students need 22 exercise balls to replace the chairs in our classroom.

My Students

My students are active learners. They need to be able to move around and work at the same time.

My school is a middle class school with mostly working parents.

My students come from all economic backgrounds, from extremely low income to parents who are able to provide wants as well as needs. My children are diverse in academic ability and ethnicity.

My Project

My students will use the exercise balls in place of chairs. When a child sits on a ball chair, they are able to direct their natural kinesthetic energy and need for movement in a positive way, because the child on a ball chair has to constantly move his body on the chair to maintain his balance. Studies show that the use of exercise balls helps improve students small and gross motor skills as well as core strength. When students are able to have that little bit of movement, it helps them get the "wiggles" out and they are more focused on the task at hand. Studies have shown that student focus improves when students are able to sit on exercise balls in the classroom. This would mean that my students are more focused on instructions and discussions, which leads to more understanding and a better grasp of the concepts being taught.

Studies have shown that using the exercise balls can decrease distracting behaviors in the classroom.

When the distractions are diminished, all students benefit. I can focus more on providing my students with the educational support that they need to make gains and grow to be successful. Students who come to me below grade level are able to grow leaps and bounds when they are focused as well as students who are at or above grade level.
