My students need tennis balls, volleyballs, basketballs, dodgeballs and a ball pump for P.E.

A typical day in my classroom begins with a big "Good Morning class!" We then move on to the flag salute and hit the ground running. Students are engaged in Common Core standards across the curriculum. By the end of the school year, I want my students to be in better physical health.
My first grade students attend an inner-city school in southern California.
The students live in a low, socio-economic community. Gangs, crime and violence are commonplace. They receive free breakfast and lunch at school. They are excited to be in first grade and learn new things. This year I have more boys than girls. They have unlimited amounts of energy on a daily basis. We enjoy putting that energy to good use in the form of P.E. I think Tennis Tuesday is their favorite activity. My class largely consists of English Language Learners. This is also true for our school. I would describe our school as a place for educating the whole child. Our main priority is academics of course, but in a fun and engaging way. We set high expectations and strive to meet the needs of all students. My school focuses on the 3r's: relationship, rigor and relevance. We love our students and only want the best for them.
I am requesting tennis balls, volleyballs, dodgeballs, basketballs and an electric ball pump. My students will use this equipment for physical education. Physical activity is an important part of life. In order for students to achieve academically, they should be fit physically. The two go hand-in-hand with one another. The students will learn the benefits of health and fitness, how to play cooperatively and good sportsmanship. We will use the tennis balls and volleyballs with a previously donated net. The multiple basketballs will enable multiple students to practice their dribbling, passing and shooting skills. It is very difficult to do this with flat balls, so the electric ball pump will keep us in the game with inflated balls. The dodgeballs will make Throw-Down Thursday a lot safer. The students in my class love P.E. and these activities will keep them engaged and excited about living a healthy lifestyle and having fun.
Donations to this project will help my students build better relationships with one another through play and exercise.
Getting active should be a lifelong goal. Starting healthy habits while the students are young may help them avoid the epidemic of childhood obesity. It is my wish that they will continue to be active well into adulthood. Students who play, have better behavior and this would have a positive impact on their academic success.
