Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the first time that you saw someone that was different than yourself? What was your reaction? How did you treat this person? These are topics that I hope to be able to discuss with my students in an effort to teach them that this world is full of unique and humble people.
My students are from an underprivileged urban setting in Illinois.
Many of their parents do not speak English and can often times not be of assistance to their child and their homework. This has not discouraged them and their love for learning. Many days they ask to stay after school to get extra help or work on projects because of lack of supplies or Internet access at home.
My Project
In a world where bullying is an increasing epidemic in our schools, I wish to educate my kids about the negative affects it can cause. Through the book "Wonder" by RJ Palacio, I plan to teach them about the themes of tolerance and acceptance. Through Socratic discussions and personal journals, I hope to teach my students that everyone in this world has a purpose- that we belong here, that we are unique and humble individuals.
By helping to fund this project, you will be opening the eyes of many young minds as you take them on a wonderful journey of acceptance and tolerance.
I want my students to stop "wondering" what a bully free zone would look like and actually be able to live it.
