Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are multi-faceted people and learners! They are lovers of math, investigators of science, learners from the the past, and lovers of literature! Many of them are doing all of this while learning a second language, the English language!
At the end of our 3rd grade year together my students will take the Virginia SOL (Standards of Learning) Assessment.
This will be a standardized assessment where they show off all of the great knowledge that they've gained throughout our time learning together! My students are coming at a disadvantage compared to other 3rd graders across the state- not only are they growing up in low-income neighborhoods, but the majority of my students speak a language other then English as their first language and therefore came into elementary school desperately trying to not only master the content areas required of them to pass a standardized assessment, but also to learn the language necessary to do so!
My Project
This is where your help and support comes in, according to the accommodations that are granted to ESL/ELL children, my students are allowed to use Spanish-English dictionaries on their end of year assessments, this will allow them to translate unknown English words as necessary and to truly comprehend the text and questions at hand. With tools such as Spanish-English dictionaries, labels for the dictionaries, storage facilitates to house the new supplies, extra sharp pencils, and a timer to help ensure that all students stay on task would will be helping to level the playing field for not only the English Language Learners in my classroom but also for all the students who are still acquiring new knowledge and new vocabulary constantly!
By giving my students all the materials necessary to feel comfortable and successful throughout their testing days you're changing the outcome of not only their test scores, but also their ability to get into better middle schools, have more options for high school, and ultimately graduate and head off to college!
(Students who do not pass certain SOL tests are not granted a high-school diploma!)
