My Students

We live in a world where technology is necessary for students to experience the world in new and interesting ways. In my classroom, technology is needed just to communicate and express our basic wants and needs to those around us. Can you imagine a school day where your voice couldn't be heard?

We are a class of 7 students, ages 13-21, with a wide range of challenges.

We face physical, intellectual, and visual challenges, as well as a number of medical challenges. We express ourselves through picture symbols and augmentative communication for all academic and social interactions. Despite these challenges, they are a great group of teenagers that wish to participate academically like everyone else. We use technology to count, convey our thoughts and feelings, tell jokes, answer comprehension questions, and express ourselves as teenagers in their school and home environments. These guys simply need to be given the technology to have an education equal to that of same-age peers.

My Project

The computer will be connected to our eye-gaze equipment, which allows the students to control devices and interact with materials using only their eyes. This equipment will allow students with mobility issues, who would otherwise need full assistance from staff members, to participate with greater independence. This computer will grant my students a greater level of independence in their classroom and build motivation and self-esteem as we work in the school environment. Who wouldn't want to complete activities and share their opinions without waiting for the assistance of others? In addition to my own class, students from other classes in our high school rotation will have access to the computer and will use it to participate in a variety of activities.

The power to communicate is critical to all students.

Some of them just need extra tools to do so. Having this computer will give them the opportunity to pursue meaningful social interactions, complete work, and prepare for employment after graduation. Thank you for considering donating to our students' futures.
