Engineering in Kindergarten: Creating and Designing

My Students

We begin by greeting each other and saying hello! We get ready for our busy day of learning by getting organized, signing in and then we explore different areas in our classroom with a variety of materials. We ask questions and work in collaborative groups to solve problems.

We are three kindergarten teachers from a large school in Vermont.

Our Kindergarten students really enjoy learning! One of the best ways for young kindergartners to learn is to use their hands and minds when exploring new concepts. Young children learn best by doing, experimenting and asking questions along the way. Trial and error is a great way for kids to figure out how to build more sustainable structures and vehicles. We are excited to have some more dynamic materials to create Tinkering Stations in our classrooms! What a great way to meet the Next Generations Science Standards too.

My Project

We need Yoxo blocks, a variety of wooden blocks and shapes, cups, balls and other tinkering tools to create and design things that they can engineer with others. These materials will provide ongoing opportunities for all the Kindergarten students, 57, in all three classrooms to explore and investigate the engineering standards for our age group. Our students will be able to construct rockets, space shuttles, vehicles, things that move and structures that have a purpose. Our students will also be able to be inspired through the books we are asking for because their message is all about creating and designing, engineering something for a purpose. The books also portray ways that collaboration can occur.

Your generous donation will help us to create Create and Make Stations in our three dynamic kindergarten classrooms!

We are so excited to invite our budding engineers to dive in and get going! Your contribution will help to make our classrooms a virtual "makers workshop"! We hope to plan much of our Next Generation Science Standards based lessons around these hands-on stations!
