Working in a charter school is both exciting and rewarding - but the downside is not having the resources that other public schools have access to. We currently do not have a library, which makes it extremely difficult to plan out good, thoughtful lessons without appropriate, engaging books.
My students are bright, engaged and have a love for learning.
They especially love story time and listening to read alouds in class. They enjoy responding to text and relating what they already know to the story. I strive to always plan my lessons around a great book from which all of my students can take something away. Having access to a more diverse collection of books would take my lessons to the next level!
My Project
The resources I have requested include a collection of books that are recognized as Common Core Exemplar sets. The Common Core Standards are the new national standards that all schools are now held accountable to meet. To do so, it is critical that I choose books that will meet these standards as well.
I have also chosen sets of non-fiction books because the new national standards expects students to receive 85% of their instruction through informational text. Most classrooms have primarily literary texts. Since I have neither, I want to go ahead and try to build a great library for both types of texts so that my students will transition easily to the new Common Core.
Reading is fundamental - we all know that.
But the more text a child can hear and see, the better reader that child will be. This is almost impossible if a classroom or school has no books. Please help me put more books into my students' hands.
