Almost everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer. I want to teach my students the science behind cancer and the cell cycle.
I believe science is best learned by interacting and experimenting. I want my students to see, feel, and experience science.
I am lucky to teach around 115 high school students in grades 9-12.
We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on. Many of my students are tactile or kinesthetic learners. Our district has struggled financially and unfortunately had to cut many of our elective programs. Without many of their interactive elective courses, I can tell my students miss being able to get out of their desks, work with their hands, and create things. I feel more responsibility than ever to provide hands-on opportunities for students. I strive to provide as many inquiry lab experiences as possible throughout all of my science courses despite the district's financial struggles and our out-of-date science labs.
My Project
Students will learn about several common types of cancer. I plan to set up stations around my classroom where students can work with a partner to see and feel tumors associated with the various types of cancer. Each station will have a microscope with slides of cancer biopsies, and one of the six anatomical models provided by this project.
Students will better understand how cancer develops and spreads. They will get to feel the Human Breast Model and learn that both males and females are able to get breast cancer. They will see how colon and lung cancer affect us and learn about many of the risk factors. They will demonstrate and observe how a healthy lung functions differently than a diseased lung. They will also learn about male cancers through the Testicular and Prostate Cancer Models. Students will gain knowledge of a variety of topics including cancer, anatomy, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle and self-checks.
Donations will improve our school by giving students an opportunity to learn about cancer in a more meaningful way.
It will help my visual and tactile learners to gain a deeper understanding of cancer and cells. It will make students aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and self-exams as well as other important cancer-related topics so that they can share with others.
