My Students
Do you remember reading Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew? Do you love Sherlock Holmes? The best way to get a student reading is to give them something they just can't put down. That's what happens when you read a good mystery. I want my students to be able to experience a book they can't put down.
Our school has a very limited budget.
So limited that we have trouble buying paper for the copier and pencils for the students. As a new teacher I am just beginning to build my library for guided reading groups and want desperately to do a unit on mystery. I know my students would love delving into a mysterious world with puzzles to figure out and I want to give them that chance in literature.
My Project
My students need guided reading mystery books such as The Maze of Bones, Sherlock Holmes, Enola Holmes and Hardy Boys. Through a mystery unit my students will have to use very high level thinking skills. Regardless of their reading ability the inherent qualities of mystery require very deep thinking and processing abilities you won't get with most books. Using these skills is essential to understanding all literature and many other subjects. By practicing these skills with exciting books they will enjoy their books and learn at the same time. (But don't tell them that!)
By donating to my project you will be giving the gift of mystery for many years to come.
Please help me in expanding my students' thinking skills and love of literature. After all, once you have read one mystery you get hooked and want to read more!
