My students need first aid kits, emergency flashlight/radios, whistles, sanitation supplies, and emergency blankets to create earthquake preparedness kits for our school.
“The future depends on what you do today.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Welcome to the Puffin Nest! We are a blended class of twenty-five bright and creative third and fourth graders. Like the other seven classrooms in our small school, our learning space is full of inquisitive energy.
The students in our classroom are encouraged to take responsibility for their education, to extend care and mindfulness to the world around them, and to participate in the civic life of their local and global communities.
This year, we have been learning about geology, earthquakes and engineering. Because our school resides in a region likely to feel the effects of an earthquake, the Puffins have decided to take action and create earthquake preparedness kits for the 8 classrooms in our school.
My Project
My students have set a goal to make earthquake preparedness kits which include emergency flashlights, radios, whistles, sanitation supplies, and emergency blankets. They would like you to know that they have researched and written their own proposals for this project. In their essays, students wrote about their project ideas and goals, how they would create and share the kits, and why this project is so important to their school community. One student explains, “Did you know that geologists think that an earthquake is due where we live in Oregon? I think we should be prepared. My classmates and I want to gather supplies and assemble 8 earthquake kits. Each kit will benefit 25 students and 1 teacher. We will also make presentations about what to do in case of an earthquake to show other classes in the school. By learning about this, we will all be less scared of earthquakes, and more prepared for a disaster.” As you can see, the creation of the kits will provide an amazing leadership and service learning opportunity for my students that will extend out into our school community.
As they assemble and share the kits, my students will continue to integrate thinking and learning skills across the curriculum.
In their own words, “With your help, we will make kits, posters and speeches to educate all the kids in our school. We can teach them not only how to use the classroom emergency kit, but also how they can make their own kit at home. Soon the information will spread. We think we will learn a lot and that this will make everyone safer. Help us bring this project to life!"
