Earth Day is Every Day! The Plight of the Honeybee.

My students need honey sticks to sample, bee books, videos, a bee puppet, and markers to learn and write about the importance of bees on Earth!

My Students

Buzz.....What is that? Bees are not to be feared, but appreciated for how they help ecosystems! Let's learn all about honeybees! All people benefit from Earth's resources and diverse environments and bees are key to a healthy environment!

My students represent a poverty rate of 98%.

They are a very diverse group of learners with special needs in social learning. I serve the whole school.....students who are visual learners, English Language Learners (ELL), gifted and talented learners, and academic special needs students. Because we have such a high poverty rate, it is very important to build background knowledge, vocabulary, and keep students engaged with hands-on activities in learning. Our school is located in a rural area with industrial buildings and train tracks around it. In a STEAM classroom it is wonderful to infuse art into all subjects-kids adore this method of learning, it means more to them than just reading about a topic and I feel energized by their desire to learn!

My Project

I envision students reading all about honeybees (National Geographic Readers and The Buzz on Bees) and how they are disappearing. We will watch a video about why they might be disappearing also. We will discuss and look at the bee up close with the bee puppet. We will discover how honey takes on a flavor of the flowers the bees pollinate by sampling three different types of honey- orange blossom, blackberry flower, and clover. (YUM!) Students will then draw and write about our honeybee's important role on Earth with the felt tip markers. I want to honor Earth Day everyday by helping to teach students not to fear the honeybee, but to appreciate this small insect.

You will be helping dramatically improving my teaching and students' learning by donating materials for this project!

Earth Day is a special social learning experience that should not be limited by socioeconomic level. Humans are connected to their environment in so many ways, and my kids will have learned to appreciate our connections to the honeybee. I will also be able to use the books and videos with future students. Please partner with me to make a difference!
