Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
During both Reading and Math you can find Mrs. Harris' students on the carpet in front of an easel that is too small to write anything on it.
I teach 18 first grade students at a Title I school in Maryland.
Most of the students receive free or reduced priced meals. The students receive breakfast and a snack throughout the day as it may be the only meals they will have that day. 13 out of 18 of my students come from a Spanish speaking home. Because of the language barrier, some of my students are reading, writing, and speaking below grade level; however, they all come to school excited and ready to learn.
My Project
Our classroom does not have any chalkboards or white boards, which makes it difficult when I want to write or draw something to further explain content. I am currently using a very small dry erase board that has limited space and oftentimes I am unable to use it because of its small writing space. It would be nice for students to be able to participate in learning activities on the dry-erase board during whole group, small group, and independent learning.
A new teaching easel would add to the limited board space we have in our classroom and it will become the new teaching board for teaching lessons on the carpet.
Its size would make it easier for students and myself to display work and the dual boards provide an opportunity for students to complete independent work.
