Drumming Around the World in Four Languages

My students need a variety of drums including Doumbeks, Djembes, Bongos, Kongas, and Floor Toms.

My Students

Remember being in music class and loving to play the drums? The students in my music classes are missing out on the opportunity to play drums from around the world. They are ready to move beyond the drums that we currently have, and learn new skills with African drumming.

Our school is one-of-a-kind: we have students from very diverse backgrounds, who are immersed in one of four foreign languages for their classroom instruction!

I am lucky to teach over 500 students in Kindergarten through Second Grade. My students are very enthusiastic learners, and are striving to achieve the high goals that our school has set for them.

My Project

Young students are always excited to play any kind of drum, and we are currently limited to using a few basic hand drums and one set of bongos. My goal is to use new drums both to accompany traditional songs and activities, and also to study African drumming and music. My students would not only be learning the techniques to play new instruments, they would be getting to experience the heritage and traditions of West African cultures. This type of drumming builds collaboration and cooperation skills, and provides an opportunity to develop creativity and self-expression. These are skills that all of our students need to be successful in life. African culture is highly valued in our school, as many of our families and staff members are from Africa. We even have an annual "Africa Day" event- a perfect opportunity to showcase what we learn with these new drums!

These new drums will bring a new level of excitement to my classroom, and provide my students with new opportunities to explore cultures from around the world.

I will be able to help my students develop both musical and 21st century skills.
