Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever felt the joy in being part of a musical group? Elementary students often do not get to be part of a musical group such as band, orchestra or choir and do not get to feel that sense of belonging somewhere. With world drumming, anyone and everyone can be a part of the group!
My elementary school is a Title I campus that serves Kindergarten through 6th grade students.
We have approximately 600 students and staff on our campus daily. With me being the music specialist, I see every student in the school. I am fortunate to see each student twice during the week so I have a huge positive impact. My school is also low socioeconomic status. We have many students who are considered homeless and at-risk. My students are great kids who love to learn about music and perform, but don't have all of the resources we need.
My Project
I have requested four hand drums to help our students to better understand the concept of rhythm and reading music. By having these drums in my classroom for daily use, students will be able to learn with various hands-on activities and further their knowledge about other cultures. World drumming allows students to learn about music from other cultures outside our traditional Western music. Drumming is also good for the body! It requires both fine and gross motor movements. Drumming also teaches us to focus and forces us to use of left and right brain functions at the same time! These additional four hand drums will help our ensemble grow and allow more students to play at a time.
My school is a Title I school with very low socioeconomic status and very little funding.
My students deserve the very best and to have the best instruments to play on. Also, the purchasing of these instruments would benefit the entire school from Kindergarten all the way up through 6th grade. Thank you for your consideration.
