This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are kinesthetic learners and I would like to capitalize on that. When I take them outside or do a lab, I find that they come alive and are more willing to participate and learn, even early in the morning.

Our school is a small charter school with a unique focus in architecture and engineering.

Most of our students come from other school districts in socioeconomically depressed areas and can struggle with skills in math and science. In some cases, they didn't do well in their home districts and are looking to turn their academic careers around. Many of my students intend to continue on to college and need a lot of support and a strong high school foundation.

My Project

My students need two classroom laboratory sets for soil layers classification and one soil sample test kit. With these materials, I will guide my students through a two-week unit starting with weathering and erosion. Students will learn how the weathering process starts and how rock and sediment break down into soil. Students will use one kit to learn about soil layering and how soil compaction over time forms layers in the Earth's crust. We will then learn about the formation of different soils in the local area. The second kit will be used to introduce the students to the biogeochemical cycle. Students will test soil samples and learn how microbial influences in the soil are important to the large agricultural industry in the area.

I would like to help my classroom continually evolve over my time at this school.

Our classroom is not configured in a traditional way for conducting labs. It is sometimes difficult to have my Earth Science students participate in hands-on activities, especially if my Biology or Physics students are utilizing the limited resources for a multi-day lab. These kits will allow the students to have materials geared specifically toward Earth Science for a lab that will be conducted outside.
