Digital technology is firmly entrenched in today's society. Most of my students do not have the advantage of having technology in their homes. Unfortunately my students do not currently have access to this in my classroom either.
My classroom is a Special Education lab setting.
I teach multiple levels of English. I have students who are classified as autistic, specified learning disability, intellect deficit and emotionally disturbed. Research is part of the district and state curriculum. My students are below grade level in reading and writing. Students in my classes will be expected to graduate and to find meaningful employment. We are in a Title 1 - low income area. Most of my students are on the free and reduced lunch program. Our school is located in the suburbs and part of a public school system.
My Project
Accessing the internet, searching for and sharing information, presenting videos, taking pictures, writing notes, are all quick and convenient and something most students do daily. My students have not been exposed to technology like most of their peers. There is a wide range of subjects and applications available for the iPads. Touch-pad technology is promising to be a very powerful tool in special education. Applications can be helpful in teaching communication skills, appropriate behaviors, and helping students transitioning to new tasks.
I want to teach my students how to find the answers to any question they have. The internet holds the answers to any question, if you know how to look for it and have the technology to do so. While reading they can learn more about the time period and people of that era. This will give my students a deeper knowledge and understanding of the information learned. Instead of me lecturing they will be creating the learning.
With an IPad, I can teach all my students the same lesson in different ways.
Research has shown that students who have an IPad to use in class and while reading have noticeable performance gains from the IPad. The only technology I have in my classroom is my desktop, an LCD projector and a DVD player. My students deserve more than this. I want them to be successful and it is my job to teach them how. We live in a technological world it is time my classroom joined that world.
