My Students
Do you remember the first time you wrote and illustrated using technology? It was amazing what your fingers, your mind, and the computer could create, right? Reluctant and awkward young writers find technology super inviting, especially with the many wonderful digital storytelling apps available.
My students are educated in a Title 1 school, with 80% on free or reduced lunch.
Access to technology is very limited in the homes, so the school hours of opportunity are very important. Their world is often limited to the apartments around them, but an iPad can lead them to read, hear, and share stories with the world. Students are highly motivated to earn a chance to share their stories using technology, but it takes time. When there is not enough technology to go around, stories are lost and students are frustrated.
My Project
When students are given a choice of how to share a reading response or tell a tale, magic happens. No longer are projects simply teacher directed look a-likes, but now a student can become familiar and skillful using a variety of technical options, and make personal choices. Struggling students find iPads encouraging to use and as a teacher, I can find assistive technology for them. Groups of students can create elegant and inspiring works when given a chance to showcase efforts in iMovie and many clever apps.
School budgets are strained with no funding for new technology, yet the opportunities to reach children with technology are growing.
Please support this effort to give Title 1 students a voice, to share their stories, and to let them read yours.
