Dictionaries Build Stronger Readers, Writers and Thinkers

My students need current editions of dictionaries and thesauri. These print resources are reliable sources and should be available to students.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There should always be time to laugh in the classroom. Learning should be fun for kids! I love to joke around during the school day because it creates a comfortable atmosphere for my students and shows them that I am a real person, not just someone who is there to teach them.

My sixth graders are kind, intelligent, talented, sensitive, fun-loving students who make my job a joy each day!

They have a lot of energy and if I take the time to build positive relationships with each of them early on in the school year, they put all of that energy into producing incredible work throughout the year! My students have taught me what it's like to love and care for animals, what it's like to be brave enough to face a fear of performing in front of an audience, what it's like to live with a hardship on a daily basis and persevere. I love teaching sixth graders in an elementary school because they still love to be hugged and nurtured, yet are ready for you to show them how to get ready for higher expectations and challenges in the middle school.

My Project

My students will use these dictionaries and thesauri frequently during the school day. When students are confronted with unknown words and have exhausted all strategies of determining definitions, dictionaries are a "go to" resource for students. They are reliable sources, unlike much of what we encounter on the Internet and provide a wealth of other information related to new words, including parts of speech, pronunciations, etymologies, and word histories. Newly published thesauri will help my students strengthen their writing and expand their vocabularies.

Donations to this project will expand my students' vocabularies and provide them with accurate information related to new words.

Often times this past year, my students wanted to utilize the print dictionaries in our classroom but could not find the words they were searching for because the resources are outdated. My students will benefit from up-to-date and reliable resources available to them in our classrooms.
