"Simply adding technology to K-12 environments does not improve learning. What matters is how it is used to develop knowledge and skills." Zucker and Light, 2009
We integrate technology with project-based, standards-aligned opportunities in which students access the highest level of Blooms: Create!
Our school has one of the most diverse populations in the state of Colorado.
With students from over 21 different countries, these loving families are proud to send their children to school in the best school district in the state, which was also named one of America's Best Employers by Forbes 2015. That means that while this title 1 school has 80% of its population on free and reduced lunch, it also attracts the best teachers in the country to support the diverse needs of our students. Unfortunately, our students do not have the same access to technology as other students in our district. With the right resources, we could not only open the door for our students to develop skills that may lead to careers in engineering and technology related fields, but it could allow for more differentiation to support the needs of our students.
My Project
With a class set of 24 noise canceling headphones with microphones, our students will be able to create projects that include voice and video without the background noise of other students who are recording simultaneously. For example, during tech, our 2nd and 3rd grade students created their own ebooks using the app Book Creator. This app allows students to create and publish a book in iBooks, Nook, or Kindle in a multimedia platform including text, pictures, video and voice. However, it was difficult for students to create quality products with the background noise of other students who were also trying to record their voices. Our first grade students created stories with prepositional phrases and patterns. After creating their scene in the Make A Scene app, they imported their image into Educreations and recorded their explanation. Unfortunately, they had the same problem with background noise. Soon students will be making their own audio books, and these headphones would help!
To use technology in meaningful ways, students need to have the opportunity to create real-world projects for an authentic audience.
Third grade students (about 125 total) will be creating audio books for the younger students to listen to during Daily 5. The students take their work very seriously, and producing something of high quality is important to them. By giving them the right equipment, their next project will impact the whole school!
