Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Economics is not a dismal science! It is exciting and interesting, and the book, Freakonomics, explores economic enigmas ~ perplexing mysteries in society. It also helps students to develop a strong interest in this subject! We will dive into the whole book and have lively class discussions and debates!
My students are kind, intelligent, curious and excited to learn about economics.
They are true thinkers and have a strong desire to learn and understand all that they can in our class. They attend a Title I school where they don't have the means to buy their own books, and the school doesn't have the budget to supply books for them.
My Project
"Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? How much do parents really matter? How did the legalization of abortion affect the rate of violent crime?
These are not typical questions an economist would look at, however the book unites these stories with a belief that the modern world, despite it's complexity and deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and if the right questions are asked, is can be even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking at things."
My students will use this book to guide interesting full class, small group, or partner discussions. We will also have debates on some of the chapters that will provide the students with a new perspective of how using economics can deal with perplexing, everyday issues in society.
This project is so important because it will give my students the chance to read a book about economics that is fascinating.
It is not a 'dismal' textbook that contains a lot of graphs, charts, or statistics- sometimes these can deter students from wanting to study Economics. My job is to create a class that is interesting and inspiring and makes students want to explore economics further. This book will help them do that.
