My Students

Irony and inside jokes are commonplace in my classroom. It is a place where high-achieving students feel safe to explore their limits and creativity alongside like-minded peers. It is a place where laughter is abundant as students tackle challenges head-on.

Many of my students find their regular classroom experiences to be boring.

My classroom exists so these students have a place where they can be challenged with thoughtful discussions and creative projects with like-minded peers. They are precocious, often steal my thunder, but I delight in their innovation as they create unique solutions to classroom projects.

My Project

About every two weeks I pull groups of 7th grade Challenge students during Prime Time, a 45 minute class designed to encourage reading and math enrichment. The group of students I will be working with don't need reading remediation, but need the opportunity for creative application and reading enrichment through a book club. We will read Cinder by Monica Myers, engage in thought-provoking discussions, and create projects prompted by the book. Students will learn to be comfortable evaluating and thinking creatively about what they read.

Individual copies of Cinder will allow my students to enjoy the book at their own pace.

So often students interact with books superficially and in traditional classroom ways. In this group and with this book they will be involved in more advanced interactions that are more appropriate to their ability level and interests.
