This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Each day my students are excited and motivated to come to school and learn. This is a play-based program where children are eager to learn. I am located in an urban suburb right outside of Detroit, Michigan. We are a Title 1 School and all of the children qualify for free and reduced lunch. This program is called a GSRP (Great Start Readiness Program) preschool classroom. My students are qualified for this program because they are more at-risk compared to other children their age. They have to be under a certain poverty level to qualify for the program
My wonderful students come to school each day excited, eager, and ready to learn.
These children deserve the best high quality preschool experience. The program is grant funded, but since we are a newer program and still need many materials, the funds are tight and we are not able to get all materials we need. These children are eager to learn and deserve the same education as other children their age. I am hopeful to inspire these young children to be life long learners!
My Project
For young children a strong oral language and reading readiness program is needed before they are ready for conventional reading. Providing children with these high-quality books and literature will create an environment where children will begin to love reading and books at a young age. This is imperative for at-risk children.
We will begin by reading the Star (Sulzby) Books each day as a read aloud.
This will begin in the first week of school. We repeat these readings every day, introducing about 4 new books in a normal month. We will read the books with intonation until the students can say much of the book with us. We also will retell these stories with props and talk about the beginning, middle and end of each story. Each of these stories were chosen for its strong narrative story elements (characters, setting, problem, events, and solution). These Star Books will be added to the classroom book bin, so they can practice “reading” the story during their arrival or work time. After the students have heard the story for at least 4 times, with research children will begin retelling the stories.
This procedure has proven highly successful for preschoolers and I am looking forward to instilling the love for reading and literacy to all children.
