Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is an opportunity for students to engage in the use of technology for the purpose of enhancing their education. We use Google Classroom, we BYOD, and we use QR codes. I want to extend the use of our iPads by making the acquisition of mandatory vocabulary fun, engaging and memorable.
My students represent the world.
Our diversity encompasses race, language and culture. Technology is a common ground for us to communicate and learn. While we are 68% free and reduced lunch we are 100% ready to learn through technology. While we are all learning what it means to be a classroom of the 21st century, technology allows us to expand our skills and ask questions that were never possible before the use of technology in the classroom (SAMR model).
My school is 1,400 and counting. We teach 6th-8th grades. Many students receive ESL and academic intervention services. The technology I use inside of my classroom allows students to speak a common language and also prepares them for the careers of their future.
Tools like Osmo make the redefinition of a 19th century classroom, into a 21st century learning environment, possible because it allows students to take charge of their learning, at their own pace while also allowing teachers to create engaging student specific lessons.
My Project
The Osmo game will be used in several different ways:
1. My After School Girls coding club will use Osmo to create games for other students to play. While not specifically coding it will introduce the girls to the cycle of creating tools for others to use and act as a segue for coding robots, etc.
2. My home economics students need to learn class related vocabulary. I am going to use the "WORDS" game to engage them in learning the vocabulary they need to know to pass their state mandated safety assessment
3. In 2016 I am going to facilitate a STEM-Maker-Health Expo at my school. One of the stations will be the different ways students can use an iPad as a tool for education. The station will introduce students, parents and teachers to the power of Osmo
4. I am a teacher training seminar presenter. I product tested Osmo with a Math, English and History teacher and we all had a great, laugh-out-loud time. We also started brainstorming on how to use this tool in our respective class
This donation will make a difference because it:
..will touch the lives of the students in my home economics classroom, my After School Girls Coding Club and the people that attend our school STEM-Maker-Health Expo
..will teach students how can technology to change their own lives and, when shared, the lives of their immediate family and their community
..will allow students to see how they can become the creator of games that others play
