Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are excited and engaged young artists. One of the most important skills to develop as an artist is the ability to draw what you see. My students would benefit greatly from the opportunity to develop their observational drawing ability through a self-portrait project.

My students are enthusiastic, creative, and dynamic art makers!

Our school is located in a high poverty, high crime neighborhood, but our school is a safe and supportive environment. I am working to create a functional and advanced art studio environment for my students.

My Project

We will use these mirrors as a way to explore both traditional drawing techniques and issues of identity and self-representation. The self-portrait mirrors will facilitate the development of observational drawing skills in the students. Rather than draw from a photograph or memory, the students will be able to focus on the contours, shading, and forms of their own face in order to create a more life-like representation. The project will be extended by a discussion on self-representation in art, media, and culture. Students will have the opportunity to consider the ways in which we represent ourselves and the ways in which others see us. This classroom set of mirrors can be used with my youngest kindergarten students to my oldest students in 8th grade.

These mirrors will can be used over and over again to spark important discussions about art, self-representation, and identity.

The self-portrait mirrors can also serve as a bridge between classrooms, creating dialogue across grade levels. Students in one grade level can share and discuss their self-representations with students from another grade level.
