My students need a variety of classroom library books including "Snitch", "Street Pharm", "Tyrell", "The Fault in Our Stars" and "The Rose that Grew from Concrete".
My students like to begin class by silently reading their books. I have students who read as many as twenty books last year. When they are intrinsically motivated to read, their reading abilities naturally improve. Last year, the number of my students reading at a college-level doubled!
My students are readers!
Last year, they loved when our grant from DonorsChoose arrived. They came into the classroom during lunch or before school to talk about books with me. We kept a running list of books we finished, and they were very proud each time they made a new entry.
Most of my students will be the first in their families to attend college, and many the first in their families to graduate high school. Providing a print-rich classroom is very important, as books open up new worlds to them.
My Project
I am building a classroom library, so my 11th grade students will be able to read books that they are interested in and that challenge them and move them to the next level. I have students who range from reading at a middle school level to students who read at a college level, so a diverse classroom library is important!
High school is our last, best shot at creating life-long readers.
If we can hook kids into reading, these skills and habits will be there for the rest of their lives!
Since I will be following the same students to 11th grade, we need to add to our classroom library, as they have already read most the books!
