Creating a Hands On Classroom For Science and Math
My students need magnifiers, plant lab materials and a digital microscope for their hands on science exploration center, along with math manipulatives.
I am a new teacher (career change) to a wonderful group of 22 third graders. My students and I spend 1.5 hours on math per day and upwards of 45 minutes twice a week on science. The math is taught workshop style so I can work with small groups as opposed to whole groups.
My peers are very supportive to this new teacher.
My students are patient and inquisitive. They need materials to help them learn the concrete before being able to move to the abstract. I have a diverse mix of kids in my classroom. Our school has roughly 62% qualifying for free and reduced meals. I am looking at using science to connect with the boys and the different math resources to support the girls, many of which don't like math. With the materials, I know I can make math and science fun for my students!
My Project
The Grab & Match Leveled Money Quickies will be used by my students to learn math independence. Time and money are two math practices that are used every day. My students will use the different manipulative's with a partner or alone, after direct instruction from me. While they work independently, I will be able to provide small group instruction with their classmates.
At our school, we receive science kits 3 times a year. I want to be able to provide my students with science explorations all school year. Weather Match-Ups, See It Grow Plant Lab and Sometime Handheld Digital Microscope, will be used with a free standing science lab for exploration.
I have a cart, that I intend to place explorations on and will use hand lenses for them to have at their disposal. While exploring the science cart, they will also be prompted to draw and write to a prompt, thus strengthening their attention to detail and their writing.
By providing my students materials that lets them learn actively, I believe my students will be more engaged.
I work hard to teach them to respect our classroom materials and show pride in their environment, I expect these materials will last many classes to come. These resources will help provide my students confidence in everyday life skills that they need to be successful. Thank you.
