Creating A Calm Environment

My students need fluorescent light covers to help reduce stress and create a calming classroom environment and a teaching easel for group lessons.

My Students

"Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work." ÂÂ" Daniel Hudson Burnham. In my classroom, we make BIG plans. At the end of the year, we plan to have made 1.6 years of growth in reading.

I have a classroom full of world leaders, little ones that are making big plans to change the world and make their mark in History.

At the beginning of the year, I took a photo of each student holding a board with their dream written on it for our dream wall. Some of my students dream of becoming doctors and healing people, others wish to become teachers and lead students to academic success, I have one little boy who plans to break Usain Bolts track record and become the fastest runner in the world, and others who want to change the world through their gifts; singing, engineering toys for children, inspiring others through voice and deed. They have made no little plans. But this is only first grade and they have odds stacked high against them. 98% of students at my school receive free or reduced lunch and for some, the two meals they receive at school are the most consistent. And that is just ONE of many challenges they face. And yet, they show up, big plans in hand, ready to learn.

My Project

Many of my students come from very high stress, high energy environments. For some, the moment of silence in the morning is the only bit of peace they have in their busy day. Our school was built as a middle school and even though it is now an elementary school, no changes have been made to make the environment appropriate for elementary age children. We have empty white walls, lack of windows and often are required to remain indoors the entire day due to severe heat or cold. Research has shown that florescent lighting interferes with students ability to concentrate and for younger students can be damaging to their developing eyes and cause headaches. Light covers would offset these negative effects and allow my students to have a sense of calm within the classroom. It would create a more child friendly environment and the more natural lighting would help reduce stress in the learning environment. We would use the easel for organized small group lessons at the carpet.

A positive classroom environment is important to student success.

By creating a more positive environment my students will be able to focus more on their work and have a greater sense of peace inside the classroom.
