This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I want my students to understand that "Creativity is intelligence having fun" (Albert Einstein).
For that purpose, they need to use their imagination through as many types of media as possible.
My students are for the most part, first generation immigrants who did not have the luxury to even go to school in their home country.
They come to school ready with a thirst to learn but yet are limited because of their parents' economic situations. They do not have the resources at home to experiment with art-like materials. Over 90% of the student population is considered high risk.
The school itself has been recently chosen to undergo renovations as its age is showing. It was built in an open access old style model that makes it look inviting. Yet, for the same reasons, safety and security in our modern society are a current concern.
My Project
With enough paper, glue, markers and scissors the possibilities are endless. For starters we are going to create paper molas to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in September. We will need lots of colorful papers to draw the animals. Then scissors to cut the animal shapes like turtles, birds or fish. Then, we will utilize lots of glue to put the pieces together. Finally, markers will be used to decorate the art works. Some other projects will require painting using washable paint and aprons to keep the students clothes clean. If we get your support to get these items a painting lesson will be created to showcase painting skills. The students will be delighted because it is their first question: when are we painting?
Lastly, my art classroom requires office items like electric sharpeners, tapes, a replacement light bulb for a projector granted to us previously by donorschoose and a computer microphone to monitor the noise level in the classroom using an online app.
This year, again, as for the past five years, my first greeting from the school's secretary was: "We have no money to order art materials!" Yet the show must go on and my students' needs do not change.
In order for my art curriculum to be properly executed, I need basic art materials such as those listed here. It is amazing to see what the kids can create with only a few sheets of colored paper and markers. Please help me give to my students the gift of meaningful art experience and creativity.
