Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Three times a week during all 4 lunch periods our Counseling Team is eagerly awaiting our students with activities, and direct dialogue to help our kids prepare themselves for College as well as Careers. We work directly with students in grades 10th through 12th.

Welcome to the city of North Shore is what you may hear when registering for the very first time.

On avearge I serve about 40 kids 1 on 1 daily. Out of 3400+ 10th, 11th, and 12th graders our Counselor Techwork meets and greets with about 60% of those kids three times a week during all lunches. During poetry and prose we work primarily with about 18 kids weekly. Poetry and prose is an outlet for at risk students to have a platform to express themselves in a structured setting. We had our first event last month in which students were able to perform in front of there peers and family. I-pads would have been great to help the students perfect their performances. Nevertheless, the kids did a fantastic job.

My Project

It's your average Thursday, spring semester, cafeteria is full of aspiring career and college bound teens with limited direction. The Counselors are standing eager to advise as students come up to inquire on future plans. As the counselor begins to speak she realizes how convenient it would be to be able to walk that student step by step as he completes the FAFSA application. This same student would be able to check his/her email on the spot for recent acceptance letters, scholarships, and or review his transcript. Counselors Corner Tech work will also utilize the I-Pads as a means for students in Poetry and Prose, which is sponsered via the counseling department, as a means to record themselves and play back when performing poetry. This is a need, for when performing poetry its more affective when you can see and hear yourself.

Many of our students will be 1st generation college bound students.

Most do not have access to technology outside of school. Those with technology are unaware of the resources available to them and how to access them. Having I-Pad's will open a door for those students by giving them hands-on opportunities to explore career pathways, apply for scholoarships and colleges with the assistance of school counselors right by their side.
