Connecting the Community Through a River of Light

My students need lots and lots of glue to create a school-wide art project for our River of Light!

My Students

Imagine a quiet December evening in small town Vermont. Snow falls gently and the evening is dark. In the distance, you hear a murmur and start to see a glow from afar. As the glow gets closer, you see hundreds of beautiful lanterns lighting up the night...

Our students are amazing - every day, I see kids who love to learn and especially like hands-on, project based learning.

With a free/reduced lunch rate of 68%, many of our students never get to the experience cultures other than their own, travel very far from home, or participate in large community events. Our community is supportive of us, but due to the socio-economic state of the area, we are lacking a lot of funding. This has caused money for large-scale projects to go away - both students and the community LOVED these projects!

My Project

We are planning a very large scale event! We have been fundraising and writing grants to bring an artist-in-residence to teach Taiko Drumming to our students. The residency is funded completely through grants and fundraising. As an ending project, we will also present a "River of Light" to our community along with our Taiko concert! A River of Light is a parade of lanterns - each student in the school (and adults as well!) will create a paper lantern as part of art class. We will walk through town with our lanterns as a way to spread joy through our community and celebrate the many holidays that happen in and around December. We want to connect with our community and feel this is a beautiful way to do so. We are requesting glue, because a lot of it is needed to create the lanterns! By receiving glue through DonorsChoose, it will help us afford some of the other materials needed for the project.

We wish to connect to our community more and make more opportunities for the people in our community to see the wonderful work our students do, the joy and happiness they feel and share, and give our students a sense of pride in showing off their creations.

This will all be accomplished through our Taiko and River of Light project. Teachers have worked very hard to write many grants for our project and this is one area in which we are still in need.
