Three years ago, our school lost our computer lab due to overcrowding. Each teacher was only given two of those computers, but they were old and outdated. Several weeks ago, my two computers finally died on me and the school district cannot afford to replace them.
My students attend a city school that is located in a low income area.
Our school has no computer lab and almost no technology to speak of. The district is monetarily unable to change this problem. Many of my students are first or second generation Americans who have no access to computers at home. Even though our school doesn't have the advantages that county schools have (monetarily and technologically) my students are bright and eager to learn. Unfortunately, they are no longer able to utilize computers to do so. I have countless math, reading, and science activities that require a computer that we can no longer do.
My Project
I would like to replace my broken computers with two new ones. Once I have working computers, the possibilities for lessons and activities are endless! Students can learn basic computer skills, such as typing and word processing. The kids will watch, play, and create simple power point presentations. They will be able to play interactive science and math games that are part of our curriculum. Students can read leveled books and stories as well as type up their own written stories.
In this technological world, computer skills are essential to daily life.
If these children want to have a successful life, they are going to need a good understanding of how technology and computers can best be utilized.
