My Students

In 6th grade, students at my school begin preparation for the Jr. High schedule by participating in a block schedule each morning. They maintain a traditional elementary school schedule in the afternoon.

My students come from a small town and the majority of them have been in the same classes together for their entire academic career.

This creates a familiar and friendly atmosphere in our classroom. They are unique and creative individuals with interests ranging from topographical maps and world history, to growing the finest sunflowers in town.

My Project

I am requesting copies of Percy Jackson's The Lightning Thief to participate in the new Common Core reading curriculum being used at our school. Our school is exploring a new language arts curriculum that is both interesting to students and rigorous in academic content. Students in my class will be able to engage in high interest reading, while also learning about important writing styles and ancient civilizations.

In 6th grade, students often struggle to find books that engage them as readers.

My goal for these books is that they will not only increase student growth in academics, but that they will also create lifelong readers, and therefore, lifelong learners.
