This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher who promotes reading among students who are not often exposed to reading for enjoyment, it can often be a challenging task. However, my students can read and actually enjoy it when they are provided with the materials and a supportive environment.
Reading can provide the opportunity for my students to expand their imagination and increase vocabulary while developing a lifelong skill.
My students live in a low income urban environment with limited transportation and resources. With 99% a free and reduced cost lunch rate at my school, it is safe to say that the majority of the students do not often get the chance to read a brand new, award winning book outside of the school setting. Despite the economic challenges my students face, many are eager to read and simply need the opportunity to develop their enjoyment of reading.
My Project
This could be our year! The students at my school have participated in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition for the past four years. We have not placed in the top five, however, this could be our year! We need a copy of each book so the students can read each title. We will develop practice questions and quiz each other by meeting weekly after school leading up to the competition.
In addition to preparing for the reading bowl competition, the students will improve their reading fluency, vocabulary , questioning skills, reading for information and reading comprehension.
The anticipated dialog from the texts will be an additional avenue to address decision making and character building scenarios. Being a part of a team is an opportunity for the students to practice working together for a common goal while realizing that each person plays a vital part to the success of everyone.
