Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I try to expose my students to many different art styles. I want them to understand that anything is possible if you have a vision. Research finds that the arts can be a vital tool for success later in life because they provide positive, creative pathways for teenagers to express their ideas.
My district has students of various ethnic backgrounds as well as many families with socioeconomic hardships.
Many of my students do not get the support from their home that is necessary. I try and create a safe haven in my classroom where artistic freedom and self-expression is applauded.
My Project
I am looking to add to my current supplies. I teach over 600 students between two schools, an elementary school and a middle school. I order art supplies once a year and sometimes I run short of certain supplies. That is my situation right now. I ordered a new kind of marker this year and unfortunately their life expectancy was not as I thought, so I am in dire need of new markers. Markers are my go to supply especially on drawing days.
Drawing is one of the most important activities you and your students can do. Drawing not only provides the basis for other creative activities - like painting, sculpture and printmaking - but it also provides a direct link with reading, writing and especially mathematics. The connection between drawing and geometric shapes and measurements simply cannot be denied. And do you know what else? Drawing is the single most accessible form of art available. All you need is a pencil and a sheet of paper and then of course markers to add some pizzazz!!!!
I try and remind myself often that teaching children about art is not just about showing them how to recognize a van Gogh or Picasso, it's about preparing young minds for a future of invaluable experiences—art related or otherwise.
