Today's students are collaborating, creating and thinking critically through classroom safe blog sites, and online websites like Office 365. My students are eager to learn these valuable life skills, but the lack of student devices has been a challenge when planning technology enhanced lessons.
I teach at a Title 1, International Baccalaureate Primary Years, magnet school.
Our goal is to create a community of global learners. My school has a diverse student population and all students receive free lunch. All of my third graders come from middle to low working class background.
If my third graders had more accessibility to devices, I would be able to plan, deliver and facilitate learning that is enhanced by technology. Students would be able to collaborate and learn from other students across the world through blogging about how they solved their daily math word problem, what books they are reading, and what they are learning about in the classroom. Having accessibility to technology, will allow me to differentiate my instruction and gear activities to students' learning needs through online learning communities such as Edmodo. Students and myself will be able to optimize classroom instructional time because I can collaborate/confer with several students at one time using Google docs and Office 365 to revise and publish their projects.
If my students had accessibility to more technology in the classroom, they would learn valuable life skills that they would be able to carry with them through the 21st Century.
They would learn how to collaborate with other students across the world, think critically, create, and be creative while utilizing technology. These are valuable in becoming a global citizen and essential for becoming a 21st Century classroom.
