Classroom Set of World Atlases for Geography Skills

My students need 36 world atlases and a teacher guide to improve and learn geography and map skills.

My Students

"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." - St. Augustine. While I cannot actually take my students all over the world, I can show them what is out there through an atlas. I can show them cities, waters, and landforms they didn't know existed through a new avenue.

I teach in a very small school district but with a lot of students in it.

This past year's 7th grade class was almost 250 students! They are very socioeconomically diverse and have a wide variety of skills and interests. I can see bright futures for them.

My Project

Half of the 7th grade social studies standards for Indiana are geography based. The textbooks we have, do not have adequate enough maps to fulfill the geography standards, which results in me needing to find outside materials to draw from. Atlases would allow for up to date maps that the students could actually study hands on. They would be developing their geographic literacy and awareness of the world. These specific atlases come with population and culture maps, continent profiles, and student activities to keep the students engaged and focused. They will use these atlases to label their own maps, study for map quizzes, and identify new places relating to the content we are studying.

Social studies is a constantly changing field.

Everyday a new country or a new leader could arise. Since we cannot get a new textbook every year, I need supplemental, up to date materials to keep the information I am teaching my students accurate. Atlases will help to increase my students' awareness of they world and enhance their geographic literacy. These skills will help to make them better, informed citizens.
