My Students
Help students with disabilities stay emotionally and physically safe in school!
I have eight wonderful students with disabilities (cognitive and emotional) in grades 5 through 8 that are eager to learn.
They attend a high need, high poverty neighborhood school in a large urban area, where funding is difficult to come by. Despite these challenges, I set high academic expectations for all of my students. Many of my students have emotional disorders and are dealing with anger management and anxiety.
My Project
Help us focus on what is really important! Because my students are dealing with emotional difficulties as well as outside factors that children should not have to deal with, they often feel threatened, angry, or anxious when they are surrounded by other students. A social worker has suggested that I create a place where students feel safe. This is why I need a two room dividers and a comfortable chair to give students who are attempting to self-regulate a place to go. The seclusion and comfort in the classroom will allow students to continue to work on reading, math, writing, science, and social studies while taking care of their emotional needs in a place they feel safe. This safe place will also help my students to calm down before turning to violence to express their emotions.
