My Students

It is my goal for students to make personal connections to what they are learning so they can apply what they learn to real life.

"I like to tell stories.

I am going to tell you a story about a girl that didn't want to belong. We didn't always live on Mango Street... I write it down and Mango says goodbye sometimes... She sets me free." - This told from the point of view of a young Latina girl inventing who she will become. My twenty-eight sixth graders have all just arrived at a brand new school. "Welcome to middle school where you enter as a child and will leave as a young adult," I tell them. They are starting to notice the complexities of life. They have important stories to tell, yet they are living new ones each day. The school sits in a diverse community with students who have grown up together. Many are Latino/a themselves and speak Spanish at home. Several come from Chicago. Many live in apartments or flats. Some live in their own house. Some live with mom and dad, others just mom, some grandparents. Each, however, still rises every morning eager to become the person they want to be.

My Project

This year more than any, these sixth graders will begin choosing the path that they will take for the remainder of their lives. They must first understand more precisely who they are and where they come from. As they examine and write their stories and relate them to the stories of others, they can begin to see their place in society and the important choices that are now upon them. Students will use this book and the short stories within as models of focused narrative writing. They can see the way setting can mold the story and how characters interact with the place they live. They can compare notes on how their own culture affects the story they live everyday.

With a copy of this book in their hands, my students will have an honest treasure to guide their understanding of self, will write their own stories to share with the world, and build a stronger community among each other through the process.
