My Students

In a school of more than 500 students who produce numerous writing assignments to be turned in, we currently have 3 printers from which they can print. In this current age of a technology-driven society, I want to enable my students to produce frequent, quality work from the computer to turn in.

My class consists of thirty sixth-grade students.

This is a diverse group of learners who are technology-driven and prefer to produce assignments on the computer. They are highly motivated to improve typing skills as well as gain practice writing online in order to adequately prepare for the online-writing test in the spring. Students want to type assignments and print their work for immediate feedback. Unfortunately due to the limited amount of printing facilities within our school it is a challenge to enable my students to complete assignments on the computer and print them in a timely fashion. We are often limited to how much we can print due to the frequency of other students and teachers using the printers.

My Project

Students would utilize a classroom printer on a daily basis. We begin each day with a writing prompt that students can later choose to further elaborate on for a grade. When students are ready to type their essays, they are often forced to have to wait to take the assignment home (if they have a jump-drive to transfer their school work to) or until a once-a-week computer lab time to type and print their assignment. This is too long to wait to provide time for multiple assignments to be completed throughout the year. In order to produce a class of well-rounded writers, students need multiple opportunities to write, receive feedback, and make changes to their work. A classroom printer would enable students to immediately print writing assignments to turn in for feedback, thus allowing them to move on to other writing assignments for additional practice. Students could also use the printer to produce online photos for reports or class projects.

A classroom printer would provide my students with more opportunities to print work for feedback in order to improve their writing.

It would also provide them another way to enhance class projects or reports by adding colorful, online photos. A class this driven by technology needs more opportunity to produce quality work without being limited by a small amount of resources. A classroom computer would provide such an opportunity for my students.
