My students need Chibitronics, a circuitry pen, and copper tape to make circuitry notebooks to explore how circuits are built and then create their own circuitry binders that light up, and to draw circuits on wearables.
Have you ever had someone tell you that you couldn't do something because you were a girl? Our Circuit Girls group explores STEAM related careers and applications in a safe and supportive space...the library. And they love to code and learn here, as often as possible.
Our Circuit Girls group this year are 11-13 year old girls who love to geek out about coding, building design challenges for each other, and talking about what they are capable of.
We meet once a week to learn a new skill and talk about the possibilities. Our school is in a progressive district, and most of our kids have access to technology on a daily basis. Circuit Girls was created to get girls interested in coding and STEAM fields instead of just playing games on their iPads. It is our second year of Circuit Girls, and many of our girls from last year returned to take on leadership roles this year. Many of the girls in our group have spoken about how it's so easy for "boys to do stuff like this" and that they are glad that they can "prove that they can do techie stuff too."
My Project
The Chibitronics circuitry notebooks are essentially a workbook for circuitry that takes each girl through the basic circuits by applying copper tape, LEDs, and a battery to complete each page. The basics of circuitry are essential knowledge for many of our makerspace tools such as the Makey Makeys and Hummingbird Kits. Once the girls have completed the notebooks we can move on to creating wearable circuitry t-shirts or bracelets with the circuitry pen. We will create them together over the course of a few months, and then we plan on using them next year to showcase Circuit Girls to incoming 6th graders.
I'm a big believer in making and creating as a part of learning.
When our Circuit Girls complete their circuitry notebooks, they will understand the difference between a parallel circuit and a simple circuit. They will also have a reference as they move onto more advanced circuitry. Our girls are lovers of tech and love to doodle and draw in their current notebooks.
