Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students are teaming up to face their adversity and propose to you an amazing initiative to better their lives! We are a District 75, special education school in the Bronx. They are growing up in poverty with multiple disabilities, but with excitement to learn.

As I have witnessed through previous successful campaigns on this website, technology makes a world of difference, especially in special education. Despite their low cognitive abilities, my students are well aware of how to navigate different features of a computer. The Internet makes my students' education come to life. The trouble we are currently having, however, is constant access to differentiated and individualized Internet-based content. With Chromebooks, my students can access the internet during the time of day set aside for working on their individualized goals. With limited time throughout the day to focus on individualized education goals that will foster success across all academic domains, access to individual Chromebooks will provide for ten-fold levels of progress. My students are comfortable and more motivated to meet their goals through technology and at their own levels and pace. Providing these for my students would make the world of difference.

For students with autism, intellectual and multiple disabilities, writing can be a daunting task. If it is not purposeful, it often loses its meaning. If it is not taught explicitly, the skills are often not retained. Having a student-powered project here is an incredible way to show my students that writing is powerful and can be used to make a positive change and contribution to their world. Through the essay writing and project development, my students will learn valuable leadership, persuasive essay writing, and collaborative partnership skills that will help them in future vocational settings. Through this project specifically, my students will be able to practice crucial self-regulation, self-advocacy and appropriate social and emotional skills.

In Their Own Words

This year, our school has a new way of learning and it is based on the computer. We love computer and think it is great. While our teacher does her best to help us have access to everything, we only have 2 computers in our classroom and there are 9 students. We try our best, but we think we can do better. We think that if we each had access to a Chromebook we would be able to be totally successful.

If we receive the Chromebooks for our classroom, we will be able to be in charge of our own learning. We will be able to help each other and be in control of our own success. We want to make sure we are all learning at our best in the greatest environment ever. We can be leaders and teach students in other classes how to use technology to learn and be successful so they can be really smart and get jobs!

It is hard for some of my classmates and I to control ourselves and its not always our fault. We have disabilities that we were born with and make it hard to be perfect students. We don't all learn the same way and sometimes we need some help understanding the stuff our teacher is teaching us. We think that having Chromebooks will make learning fun and help all of us understand everything better. It will make our class a bunch of successful scholars! Thank you in advance for your help!
