My students need 30 Chromebooks for reliable, easy to use technology on a daily basis in the AVID classroom to help them prepare for colleges and careers.
What's your career? What percentage of your time is spent on the computer?
Putting technology in the hands of middle school students will give them invaluable tools and skills as they move into the work force.
Many of the students in the AVID program will be the first in their family to attend college.
Some are new-comers to the United States. Some receive free and reduced lunch. Many are minorities.
All of them are driven to make a better life for themselves. They strive to get good grades, go to college, and have numerous career opportunities.
The students have written letters to admissions offices of colleges and universities from the United States and Europe. We have toured one campus this year and will be visiting two more.
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program builds students who realize the dream of college is attainable.
We work in collaborative groups guided by learning and desire. We write. We question. We advocate. We celebrate. We tutor.
Our K-8 school is a mix of new immigrants and long-time residents. There are more than 5 languages and even more countries represented by AVID students at our school.
My Project
Paper? Pencil? Pen? Sure. However, paper gets lost. Pencils break. Pens dry up. After a paper is done and graded, it's forgotten.
The 30 Chromebooks requested will transform the learning. Students will create and share their work with Goggle Docs. Students will create a website portfolio of completed work for the future. Students will blog and share their thoughts with a world audience and not just a teacher. Students will gain experience in word processing and presentations. They will send emails. They will subscribe to podcasts. They'll be ready for the challenges of high school and college. More importantly, the will be connected with the world and have skills that will make them ready for a career.
Chromebooks are simple. They start up in 8 seconds, saving precious class time. They connect right to the students Goggle accounts. They give the students instant access to the internet and any piece of information that they need. They last all day.
Which new employee would you rather have?
One that has been using technology since 6th grade and can pick up new technology quickly with minimal training or one who doesn't have much experience and will need extensive training?
Putting technology in the hands of middle school students, especially the AVID students, who have a drive for future success but limited resources, makes sense. Please consider giving these awesome learners every advantage they deserve.
Thank you!
