We are a blogging classroom! My kindergarten students create content on their blogs by writing short, personal narrative stories about events in their lives. Blogging motivates them to write and explain their learning because they are aware of the authentic audience that comments on their work.
We are a class that loves to create!
We create with traditional kindergarten materials such as blocks, paper and glue but we also create digital materials. We enjoy outdoor work in addition to our classroom work. Whether we are hiking through the woods that surround our school, working on an igloo during the NH winter or learning about numbers in the teens, we share our work through pictures and writing and post them on our blogs. We check our classroom blog and the student blogs each day to look for comments and practice our literacy skills. We love sharing what we do in our classroom and enjoy opportunities to connect with other classes. Our connections span the globe.
We are a small, rural k-8 school that supports technology through the school budget and grants. We are the only classroom that blogs regularly. Parents love to see our work and extended family members also enjoy to opportunity to peek inside our classroom.
My Project
My students need 2 Samsung Chromebooks to give them more access to writing content and doing research in a digital format. With two new Chromebooks, the students could easily use them for writing posts for their blogs. They could upload pictures of their work and write stories to describe the photos. We have 4 desktop computers that are used by the students but the Chromebooks will simplify logging on and getting started. The students will not be limited to working in one specific area to write.
Blogging has expanded children's literacy skills. They are not restricted by having to form letters, and they write more in a digital format. The digital writing allows them to post directly to their blogs and adds independence to this activity.
Students also work cooperatively to read and write on their blogs. They learn from each other and thus expand what they are able to do alone.
The Chromebooks will allow more students to work on their digital writing and blog work at the same time.
They will expand the number of computers available to each student. We have one Chromebook in the classroom that I purchased myself. I have seen how easily it starts and how easy it is for the students to use.
