Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 8th grade U.S. History. This course covers a time period from early exploration of the Americas through reconstruction after the American Civil War. I believe an understanding of this era of United States history is fundamental to the development of conscientious future citizens.

I would describe my students as a group of high achievers who have the potential to become some of the best contributors to our community and far beyond.

I have a diverse group of teenagers who are finishing up their middle school careers and preparing for high school. While they are digital natives they lack the basic skills required to efficiently use technology to further their education. These skills are invaluable for high school, college, and in professional life.

My Project

Our school district has recently become affiliated with Google for Education. Additionally we have adopted a new textbook that has a plethora of electronic resources the students can utilize. The problem is the ability to access these resources. Currently my students have access to a computer lab but this computer lab is shared among different disciplines and grade levels. Further, the computers in this lab are becoming dated and inefficient. With a fully funded project my class would be able to have access to computers everyday. We would use these computers to develop the 21st century skills needed to be competitive in the world today. These skills include fundamentals like email, research, and producing multimedia presentations. As it pertains to the content, we would be able to access primary sources. Studying primary sources is an excellent way to develop a deeper understanding of the past and how it connects to the present. We have the resources, we need access.

A fully funded project will help my students develop the essential skills needed for success in high school, college, and professional life.

We would have access to the resources we already have available. The students will be able to explore how technology can be used, not just for entertainment, but to further their educational goals. In studying history it is essential to make it connect to the present. Having access via a classroom set of chromebooks allows my students to have that access.
