Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
While we have many wonderful programs in our school, like the incredible dance program and many inclusive special events, not all grades have visual art class. We are a Prek through 12th grade school, and currently there isn't space in the art room schedule to accommodate grades one through five.
The spectacular second grade consists of 25 students who range in age from 6 years old to 8 years old.
The students come from various socioeconomic backgrounds, and there is a wide range of diversity in the class. More than half of the students speak a second language at home. Several of the students receive specialized services to support their learning experience.
It is so important in these early years for the students to be exposed to different mediums as a way of connecting to the subjects, concepts, and skills covered throughout the school year. For many of the students, the opportunity to work with art will be a chance to showcase their success and to excel within an academic subject area where they might normally struggle. This will further support the students' growth and build self-confidence, thereby creating well-rounded students who are excited about their school experience.
My Project
My students need a professional teaching artist to lead this experience of using art lessons to enhance and deepen our social studies learning. This will be a materials-rich experience for our class! They will get to put their hands in clay, work with collage techniques, paint, experience pastels, draw with "grown-up" art pens, create paper sculptures, learn about experimental photography and more, all while exploring concepts related to community and leadership that are such a vital part of our school's mission.
The mission of our school states that we may change someone's destiny and impact humankind through rich experiences. Art is a transcending subject which may spark students' interest, helping them navigate through their school careers with a new passion discovered through art workshops in their formative years. What better way to reach this goal then to use art as a means to grow our social studies curriculum while making the subject material accessible to all learners?
Nicole will supply and prepare all materials needed with the fee quoted.
Our diverse group of learners are so fortunate to be together in a school that supports the arts and creative learning.
By bringing Nicole on board for this project, we are ensuring that this year's second grade class is exposed to the visual arts in a way that is empowering and inspiring. These art-making sessions will support the children's understanding and exploration of community and leadership concepts through the artistic process and the opportunity for self-expression.
Nicole Pouliot
(Nicole is a professional Teaching Artist who specializes in marrying classroom core content with art projects for the classroom that expose students to a wide variety of mediums-- painting, sculpture, collage, puppetry, and more. Nicole would like to collaborate with the class to explore through art making these prompts from our Social Studies learning unit on the concept of community:How do communities change? How can one person make a difference? What does a good citizen do?)
