Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students at Harding love to sing, dance, and play their way to music literacy. We explore our curiosity together through inquiry based projects and collaborative, community building music making. Some of our favorite activities are composing, performing, and singing together.

My students are eager to learn!

As a school that serves a majority lower income population, Harding students often come from disadvantaged situations, but that doesn't stop them. Their tenacity and drive to learn in spite of adversity is inspiring. We, the Harding school community, take it upon ourselves to enrich the lives of our students, to build their self-esteem, and to support the next generation of scientists, doctors, and musicians. My students love music class. It is a place where we get to shout, yell, stomp our feet, make faces, and tell stories all while engaging in a rigorous curriculum that builds 21st century skills. Music class lets us be human, and Boomwhackers let us have fun while answering questions about the science of sound.

My Project

The Boomwhackers will be used in a myriad of ways to creatively explore concepts in music, math, and science. We will use them to make music and to learn to read music. During that process we will explore how instruments make sound, how higher sounds and lower sounds are produced, and how we can design our own instruments to make music. In this way, music, math, and science concepts are taught holistically. We will make our own instruments using the Boomwhackers as models. How will we change pitch? How do sound waves travel and how does that affect our instruments? Does the diameter of the tube matter? During this process of inquiry we will use creative thinking to imagine, plan and execute new designs; we will use collaborative processes to work together to compose music, design instruments, and answer questions; and we will critically analyze the process, product, and performance.

Boomwhackers, by their very whack-able nature, are such child-centered instruments!

With these tools, we can make music in a natural way and acknowledge the right of children to move while they learn. While this helps all children, it especially helps boys and students with certain special needs. Boomwhackers help make the music room inclusive, child-centered, science inquiry ready, and joyful!
