Chemistry of Life

My students need a Molecules of Life kit to better understand biochemistry. Genetics includes biochemistry concepts, but Chemistry is not taken until after the course.

My Students

Can you imagine being in a class where you're expected to apply Chemistry, but you have never taken Chemistry? My Genetics students are expected to understand the chemical structure and bonding properties of water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids without taking Chemistry.

My students come from a wide array of backgrounds.

My typical Genetics class encompasses 10th graders. With the amount of diverse learners in each class, laboratory experiments build a learning environment conducive to assist each student to grasp concepts of biochemistry.

My Project

Students study the basic structure of the chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins by constructing three-dimensional models. Starting with the water molecule, students use easy-to-follow, individualized worksheets and color-coded plastic atoms to: construct a model of water and three monosaccharides; form a disaccharide; study isomerism; construct a part of a simple starch molecule; build models of alcohols and fatty acids, comparing them to their structural formulas; construct models of amino acids; construct four representative amino acids; and construct a protein with their models. All components are reusable, so I can use this kit for years.

I love to see my students' faces light up when they really grasp difficult concepts.

Without the generosity of donors like you, my students will not be able to experience the full learning cycle of engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate. Please allow my students to not only learn the basics of biochemistry, but apply their knowledge.
