My Students

My students are constantly creating, thinking, and moving! In our library makerspace, we are constantly designing, creating, and inventing. We believe in learning by doing and are excited to try new things. Besides making creators, we also want to build students who can think logically.

Nestled in a suburb of Kansas City, our school is a building that is constantly seeking innovation and research to help boost our students' achievement.

Our kids love hands on activities and trying new things. Recently, we have become a district that is 1:1, meaning that every student has a technological device of some kind. While access to technology is great, we are noticing that our kids are losing some of their ability to problem solve and interact with the world around them. We want to develop kids who not only know how to use the latest device, but who also know how to interact with other people and use strategies to solve problems.

My Project

Our desire to teach students the game of chess has two main purposes. Our first purpose is that our students will learn a universal game they can play with people from around the world. This game can develop their interpersonal skills and help students form lasting relationships. Secondly, we want to use chess as a way to teach process thinking. Students will be writing their own directions to help teach others to play this game. This task of understanding how to play something and then developing lessons to teach others will help students with their logical thinking and reasoning skills.

The donation of these chess sets may seem small, but it will allow our students the ability to participate in this classic game for years to come.

Students will leave our classroom with the ability to engage and connect with students and adults from across the globe.
